hi sorry I saw ur tags but as someone who wants to go into publishing I avoid booktok girlies with a passion. I'm glad they've rediscovered their love of reading but I wish they'd stop calling acotar and other books the like. height of art. I've had the same experience in my university's book club and just. stopped going since it was the only thing they talked about lol (new adult as a whole genre is. fascinating to me in a I wish I could study it kinda way)
yeah it’s definitely been interesting learning about new adult from them, but i can only handle hearing the word “spicy” in an academic setting so many times before i start spiraling lmao
just learning more about the industry has been very,, enlightening. i’d recommend following xoxopublishinggg on instagram if you don’t already bc they share a lot of perspectives from people in the industry. it was a bit disenchanting, but there’s a lot of good info there!
also! while there are a lot of booktok girlies in my program, i’ve noticed that a lot of them are having mild existential crises as they realize that publishing isn’t really super creative and is, in fact, still just business. and from what i’ve heard from people in the industry, there’s so many young people leaving. for many reasons, such as shit pay, but a really big one is also that they didn’t know what they were actually getting into
i have so many things i could go on and on about, but yeah. i love that booktok girlies have revitalized the industry, but i do not want to be talking about smut in class! especially not in front of our 50+ year old instructors who are all in senior publishing positions and could one day be our employers if we’re lucky!!!
